Welcome to NY, 680: New area code announced

Three one five, meet 680. Six eight zero, this is 315. You'll be neighbors. Perhaps, in time, you can be friends.

The state Public Service has waited only five days before breaking the news that 680 will be the area code to be overlaid on the region now served by 315. The PSC announced last week that it had decided to add a second area code in that 18-county region because there were perilously few unassigned 315 numbers left.

The region includes Wayne, Seneca, Yates and part of Ontario counties.

After years of discussion, the PSC opted to add a second area code that will be used by new customers in that 18-county region. Customers who currently have 315 numbers would keep them.

The second area code will be activated in early 2017, the commission said in a news release. Once the new area code is fully in use, customers in that 18-county region would have to dial the area code for any call they make within the region, even if it’s across the street.
