Escapee Richard Matt was drunk when he was killed

David Sweat and Richard Matt led police on a three-week manhunt.

Prison escapee Richard Matt's blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit to drive a vehicle when he was shot and killed by police, State Police said today.

Toxicology results showed Matt had a blood alcohol content of 0.18 percent at the time of his death June 26, State Police said.

His fellow escapee, David Sweat, was captured two days later and is being housed at a maximum-security facility in the Finger Lakes.

Police said that Matt was carrying a shotgun and failed to comply with police orders to drop his weapon when he was discovered in the Adirondacks after the pair escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora on June 6.

They are believed to have gotten the booze after breaking into hunting cabins in the mountains.

Police said a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Tactical Unit member discharged several rounds from a semi-automatic weapon striking Matt in the head three times, State Police said.

The cause of death was severe skull fractures and brain injuries due to gunshot wounds to the head. Matt also had "bug bites on the lower extremities, blisters, and minor abrasions consistent with living in the woods for three weeks."
