Hornell police say a 1-year-old child allegedly assaulted by his caretaker at the start of the holiday weekend has died.

Ian Mykle Maniske-Huff died shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday at Strong Hospital in Rochester, police said in a statement. He had been left in the care of 22-year-old Dakota M. Miller of Hornell, and sustained an unspecified injury on or about Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Miller was jailed on a charge of second-degree assault prior to the child's death. Hornell and New York State Police are investigating. Once the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office completes a post-mortem exam, investigators will contact the Steuben County District Attorney's Office, to consider further criminal charges, the police statement read.
