Thirty-three recent college graduates and college students from the Rochester area will be recognized Wednesday for their community service by Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren.

The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at City Hall. The participants honored will present posters showing the focus of service projects.

Twelve of the students have been involved in Rochester Youth Year, an AmeriCorps VISTA-sponsored program that places recent college graduates in community-based organizations and programs for a year.

The students are graduates from the University of Rochester, St. John Fisher College, Nazareth College, The College at Brockport and State University College at Geneseo, said UR spokesman Jim Mandelaro. Their host agencies include the City School District, Cornell Cooperative Extension and Young Women's College Prep.

Twenty-one of the students participated in University of Rochester's 10-week Urban Fellows summer program, which emphasizes civic engagement and learning about urban issues. Fourteen of these fellows are UR students. The rest are Rochester natives attending other local colleges or schools elsewhere.

They receive stipends and work four days a week in agencies throughout the Rochester area. The fifth day is spent in campus seminars led by faculty members and community leaders.
