Barbara Beach, great-grandmother of Tyler Doohan, dies

Staff report

The great-grandmother of Tyler Doohan, the 9-year-old East Rochester boy who died saving others in a Penfield fire earlier this month, died early Friday morning, according to her son.

Joseph Breyette, 43, of Holley, Orleans County, confirmed that his mother, Barbara Beach, 66, who was seriously burned in the Jan. 20 fire, died about 5 a.m. Friday at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Tyler Doohan, Lewis Beach, 63, and Stephen Smith, 54, also died in that fire.

The fire tore through a mobile home in the East Avenue Manufactured Home Community in Penfield. Tyler is credited with waking six family members, including Barbara Beach, who all escaped the burning trailer. Fire investigators believe Tyler died while trying to save his disabled uncle.

The funeral for the three other family members was held Wednesday.
