147-year-old shoe company in Batavia closing

Staff reports

One of the nation's oldest shoe makers is apparently closing its doors.

P.W. Minor and Sons Inc., located in the city's Batavia Industrial Park off Route 33, has filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice with the state Labor Department indicating it plans to shut down by Sept. 1.

The company indicates in the notice it employs 72. Layoff notices are expected to occur between now and Sept. 1.

The company was founded in 1867 by a pair of Civil War veteran brothers. It makes a full line of men's and women's casual, walking, and dress shoes and boots.

Company officials did not return multiple messages Tuesday seeking comment.
