Visit elderly in long-term care

With the holidays upon us, it brings to mind people in need who are unable to care for themselves. One such population that I am speaking of are the elderly population within long-term nursing care facilities. Specifically, those dealing with mental illness.

As we grow old, the changes in roles that we once identified with happen dramatically, and the effects of this on our mental health can be devastating. Rather then help, we can try to medicate these symptoms. Which leads to the issue of the lack of attention and care that elders can receive from the outside community while in long-term nursing care facilities.

It is important for us to remember that visiting those in nursing care centers (even those we may not be related to), can have a great impact on one's mental health and what it means for them to be cared for.

This holiday season take it upon yourself to engage with the elderly in long-term care.
