Robert Davis, Wilson teammates aim for another trip to sectional finals

Democrat and Chronicle

The Wilson Wildcats have a record in high school boys basketball that is just above a .500 winning percentage, so there is good and bad news coming along with that mark.

Robert Davis, a junior guard in his third season as a starter at Wilson, scored his 1,000th varsity point Jan. 3. That is good news, as Wilson coach Brendan O'Toole believes that the 5-foot-7 inch Rochester City Athletic Conference all-star can reach 1,700 before graduating.

Wilson's Robert Davis drives to the basket during sectional tournament action.

The bad news is that Wilson lost that game against Leadership Academy for Young Men. Leadership and Wilson are in Section V's Class A2 Tournament, once the postseason begins Feb. 17.

“We look at a record and the guys are disappointed,'' O'Toole said. "But I pointed out that some of our losses are to Rush-Henrietta, (as of now) the No. 1 seed in Class AA, Pittsford Sutherland, the No. 1 seed in A1, and Leadership, which is undefeated and No. 1 in A2.

"Some of our losses are to very good teams. Last year, we won eight games in the regular season. I'm certainly not disappointed with 6-5."

Some of the good news is that the Wildcats know they can make noise during sectionals. The Wildcats reached the last two Section V Class A2 Tournaments finals, knocking off top-seed Leadership Academy during the 2017 postseason.

Davis, Wilson's leading scorer at 23 points per game, and junior forward Desi Floyd are the starters back with the Wildcats, who fell to Wayne during the 2016-17 sectional final.

"Yes, (Davis) is taking a lot of shots, but it’s at a better percentage," O'Toole said. “He shoots a true jump shot. He’s getting better at going to the basket and finding guys, too. He’s more willing to distribute.”

Davis is at a 46 shooting percentage, up from 31 last season. He's made 31 percent of his 3-pointers, up from 28 percent in 2016-17. Davis also has managed to bump up his free-throw shooting percentage, from 76 to 78.

Floyd is Wilson's next leading scorer at 14.5 points per game, to go along with an average of 8.5 rebounds. Brennan Clark, a 6-3 sophomore in his first varsity season, is the team's leading rebounder with 13 per game, while averaging 14 points.

While Wilson's season has an up-and-down appearance, the Wildcats share the lead in the RCAC Division B or Lower Division race. Both World of Inquiry and Wilson are 3-0 in division games. Wilson takes on Northeast Douglass (3-2, 7-4), 6 p.m. Friday at No. 33 School.
