Storm watch warns of heavy snow accumulations

A winter storm that's expected to bring sleet, freezing rain and snowfall to the area beginning Sunday could blanket parts of the area with about a foot of snow by Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

As of 5 p.m. Saturday, the Weather Service issued a winter storm advisory that will be in effect from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon for Monroe, Wayne, Genesee, Livingston, and northern Cayuga counties.

.A winter weather advisory for sleet and freezing rain remains in effect 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. Monday.

Freezing rain early Sunday morning could result in difficult driving conditions, according to the Weather Service. Heavy snow and blowing snow Sunday night and Monday will produce poor driving conditions with poor visibility and potentially deep snow.

Snow accumulations could be up to inches Sunday, another 2 to 4 inches Sunday night, and an inch or less Monday, causing poor driving conditions and visibility under a quarter of a mile at times Sunday night and Monday, according to the weather alert.

Meteorologist Aaron Reynolds said weather service staffers are still analyzing the data and will know more as Sunday approaches, but that the storm could tangle traffic on Monday.

"There is potential there for a messy morning commute," he said.
