5 newbie tips for attending beer or wine festivals

Amy Haneline
Pretzels help clear your palate between tastings.

I attended my first beer festival with friends many years ago. We were far from prepared. We didn't eat breakfast. We didn't make pretzel necklaces. We didn't have a ride!

Don't worry, we made it home safely thanks to my sister and brother-in-law. But, you can learn from our rookie mistakes. Don't be like us.

1. Get a ride.

Samples may looks small, but they add up. Most events offer designated driver tickets. Otherwise, make sure you have information for a cab or bus.

2. Fill your tummy.

Carb-heavy foods are known to slow the absorption of alcohol, preventing hangovers. Also, drink your fair share of water before game time. Continue to alternate samples with the clear stuff throughout the event.

3. Plan ahead.

Preview the list of vendors prior to the event. At large festivals, you likely won't be able to hit them all. Seek out breweries and wineries you've never tried first.

4. Work the space.

Take a minute to scope it out. If there are any special tappings or stations, you'll want to take note. Specialty products can go quickly.

Wine enthusiasts crowd the Thousand Islands Winery booth at a recent Finger Lakes Wine Festival.

5. Make a pretzel necklace.

This may be more of a beer festival thing, but it's a good idea. Grab string and a bag of pretzels and load that sucker up. Wear it around your neck and you will have a quick and convenient solution to cleansing your palate between tastings. (Make sure beforehand that this is allowed at the festival).
